Stoppard was born in London, England, the son of playwright Tom Stoppard and physician/author Miriam Stoppard (née Stern). Both of his parents are Jewish and he was raised in a secular household. He attended Caldecott School, Stowe School, a boarding school in Stowe, Buckinghamshire. His parents divorced when he was 18 with his father entering into a long-term relationship with actress, Felicity Kendal. He read French at the University of Edinburgh, graduating in 1997, and later trained at LAMDA.
He is married to Amie Stoppard, a niece of Terrence Stamp, who he met working behind the scenes on the film Rogue Trader The pair have three daughters: Esmé, Maggie and Evie.
His first cousin is politician Oona King, Baroness King of Bow and his first cousin, once removed, is politician Ted Graham, Baron Graham of Edmonton.
